FAQ

Cooling 101

Life expectancy of an air conditioner

Most ductless conditioners or central air conditioners will last approximately 15 years. However many elements may interfere with this fact; the quality of installation for one and regular maintenance are key to extend the life of your air conditioner.

What is Inverter technology?

This technology allows the compressor to operate at an almost unlimited number of speeds. These units normally start at full speed when there is the need for heating or cooling. After the setpoint is reached, the units typically reduce the compressor speed to pump just enough refrigerant to match the requirements of the home. This provides energy savings as well as longer cycles. The longer operating cycles provide more cleaning/filtering of the homes' air and more even temperature distribution.

Maintenance of an air conditioner

It is highly recommended to service your cooling unit seasonally: efficiency, proper operation and reliability of your system depend on regular maintenance.

What's the difference between R-22 & R-410A refrigerants?

HFCH-22 refrigerant contains a chlorine molecule which damages the ozone layer. As of January 2010 it will be forbidden to build or to import new systems with R-22 in Canada. However, HFCF-22 will remain available until 2020 to ensure the maintenance of existing systems. Most manufacturers now use HFC-410A in the fabrication of air conditioning units. This refrigerant offer sensibly the same efficiency as R-22 but is considered more ecological since it doesn't cause damages to the ozone layer.

What does SEER or TRÉS mean?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (or TRÉS: Taux de Rendement Énergétique Saisonnier), an energy efficiency rating which evaluates the energy consumed by the unit versus the energy it supplies. The higher the SEER, the most efficient your unit. A more efficient system uses less electricity and offers equal power.

Can I buy a ductless system and install it myself?

NO! Whether it's a central system, ductless system or heat pump type system, they must all be installed by a qualified contractor who has the required skills for this kind of installation. His technical knowledge will insure an adequate & secure installation, as well as reliability and optimal operation of the system. Also, if the system has not been installed by a certified contractor the manufacturer will NOT honour the warranty.

Info-Comfort

BTU

A British thermal unit is a unit of heat energy. One Btu is the amount of heat required to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. The higher the Btu rating, the greater the heating capacity of the system.

COP

French term : Coefficient de performance. Mesure de l'efficacité du chauffage

HSPF

HSPF stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor and measures heat pump efficiency. The minimum set by the Department of Energy is 6.8 HSPF and for Energy Star, 8 HSPF. The higher the HSPF, the greater the energy economy.

Variable Speed Motor

A motor that automatically adjusts the flow of warm or cool air for ultimate comfort.

CFM (PCM)

Stands for Cubic Feet per Minute. This measurement indicates how many cubic feet of air pass by a stationary point in one minute. The higher the number, the more air is being moved through the ductwork by the system.

Heat Pump

A heat pump is an HVAC unit that heats or cools by moving heat. During the winter, a heat pump draws heat from outdoor air and circulates it through your home's air ducts. In the summer, it reverses the process and removes heat from your house and releases it outdoors.

Ton

Unit of measurement for determining cooling capacity. One ton equals 12,000 BTU/h.

Why should I replace my existing heating or air conditioning system?

You may wish to consider replacing your system if it is old, inefficient or in need of repair. Today's systems are as much as 60% more efficient than those systems manufactured as little as ten years ago. If you are concerned about utility bills or are faced with an expensive repair, you may want to consider replacing your system rather than enduring another costly season or paying to replace an expensive component. If you plan on financing the purchase, the monthly savings on your utility bill should be considered when determining the actual monthly cost of replacing a system.

How should I clean the plasma filter of an I.A.Q. system?

The plasma filter has a life span of 6 to 8 years and should be washed every 400 hours of use. The filter easily detaches to be washed with mild detergent. The filter is not dishwasher safe. A LED light on the indoor evaporator unit will notify you when it is time to clean the filter. If the light is ignored, the unit will automatically shut down after 100 additional hours of use until the filter is washed.

What type of system is ideal for my home ?

If you have venting ducts, a central heat pump or air conditioner can be installed. If your heating system consists of electric baseboards or hot water radiators, a mini-split system is a good choice. If you are a tenant, a portable or window unit will suit your needs.

How much surface can a system cover?

It depends on many factors i.e. construction type, year of construction, building orientation, etc.... It is best to contact a specialist who will know what to recommend.

How does your after-sales service and warranty coverage work?

We have an EMERGENCY 24-hour service and our experienced team is familiar with the warranties for the products we carry. Contact us if you need additional information.

Energy Star

What is Energy Star?

The international ENERGY STAR® symbol is a simple way for consumers to identify products that are among the most energy-efficient on the market. Only manufacturers and retailers whose products meet the ENERGY STAR® criteria can label their products with this symbol. Choosing an ENERGY STAR®-labelled product over a conventional model could save you hundreds of dollars in energy costs.
